 The pursuit of beauty is very common and strong in this society, and beauty is seen as an important social capital, a symbol of attractiveness, confidence and success. People often invest a lot of time, money and energy in all aspects of beauty, including appearance, physical health and dressing. Appearance is becoming increasingly important for people’s evaluation and recognition, leading many to engage in behaviors such as cosmetic surgery in order to conform to societal aesthetic standards. This has contributed to the rapid development of aesthetic medicine. 

In 2055, people began to pursue painless and effective ways to become beautiful, and there was a major breakthrough in scientific research in the field of olfaction. The development of painless beauty was an orgy of joy, but was this a social problem? This is a project that raises anxiety about appearance and explores it. In 2055, the importance of appearance has gradually increased, and the rapid development of CRISPRoff technology has also contributed to the rapid development of aesthetic medicine. People began to pursue painless and effective ways to become beautiful, and there was a major breakthrough in scientific research in the field of olfaction. We designed a unique fetal education program in which genetic scent molecules that can change the appearance of a baby are placed in an aromatherapy candle through specific music and elaborate aromatherapy candles, which are heated by burning and the scent molecules in the candle are transmitted to the pregnant woman. The olfactory receptors in the nasal cavity of the pregnant woman process and bind, thus influencing the genes of the baby’s appearance in her body. 

The effect on the appearance of the unborn child such as a perfect body odor and fair skin is brought about. These fetal education services allow pregnant women to determine the appearance of their child in an easy and painless way. Speculative Stuff



Speculative Stuff is a public archive of speculative design works developed through Yonsei University’s Integrated Design courses, 
led by Hyunjae Daniel Shin (Associate Professor) and Eun Sun Park (Lecturer).

The platform documents how undergraduate students begin with small everyday questions — discomforts, contradictions, awkward moments, and social habits we often overlook — and transform them into speculative objects, future scenarios, and critical narratives.

These works are not predictions of the future. They are invitations to look again at the present. By using comedy, exaggeration, absurdity, and preposterous worldbuilding, the projects make familiar systems feel strange and open up alternative ways of imagining technology, culture, society, and the environment.

The course has been shaped by an ongoing pedagogical exploration of Speculative Critical Design, combining futures studies, design research, interactive workshops, and public engagement. It encourages students to move beyond solution-driven design and develop more critical, imaginative, and participatory ways of engaging with alternative futures.

The methodological background of Speculative Stuff is further informed by Eun Sun Park’s doctoral research on the Preposterous Comedy Approach for Speculative Critical Design, which examines how comedy techniques, preposterous futures, and speculative artefacts can support critical thinking, public engagement, and future-oriented design education.
